The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Corrections Standards Authority (CSA) awarded 44 grants totaling $44.6 million to 28 different counties as a part of its Mentally Ill Offender Crime Reduction (MIOCR) grant program. Click here to see the full list of grantees.

The California MIOCR program is designed to support the implementation and evaluation of county efforts to increase access to community-based services and supports, facilitate successful transitions from incarceration to the community, and reduce recidivism among both adults and juveniles with mental illnesses involved with the criminal justice system.

CSA awarded $22.3 million to projects geared toward adults and $22.3 million to projects geared toward juveniles; many counties received grants for both juvenile and adult projects.

California's MIOCR program was established in 1998 after the passage of Senate Bill 1485, which was co-sponsored by the California State Sheriff's Association and Mental Health Association. The CSA last awarded 15 MIOCR grants in 2001.

The Governor's proposed 2007-2008 budget, released January 10, also includes a $50 million allocation for the MIOCR program for next fiscal year.
