The Wayne County Common Pleas Court is working to create a formal system that would provide additional mental health services and oversight to probationers, with hopes of reducing the number of repeat offenders, according to a presentation during the board of commissioners' meeting Wednesday.

Cheryl Gerwig, chief probation officer and probation officer Cindy Hall, who has a background in criminal justice and mental health issues, worked to create a mental health track in the common pleas system, through which offenders meeting certain criteria can be referred. The goal is to provide a better means of meeting mental health needs among residents charged or convicted of felonies who face community control sanctions.
