Fiscal Court intends to use the $5,000 grant to come up with a strategy for creating a mental health court for Campbell, Kenton and Boone counties.
Fiscal Court plans to work with the Campbell County Criminal Justice Advisory Commission - a group of professionals involved with mental health and law enforcement - to fashion a strategy to pursue that goal.
A significant number of jail inmates suffer from mental illness, and they pose a chronic obstacle to the administration of justice, Campbell County Judge-Executive Steve Pendery said.
He hopes that the mental health court can address their needs with treatment so that they're not continuously cycled through the justice system.
