2011 JMHCP National Training and Technical Assistance Event: Agenda for Wednesday, February 9, 2011
6:00-7:30pm
Welcome/Opening Receptions
In this session, David D'Amora and Danica Szarvas-Kidd provided opening remarks and a welcome from the hosting agencies, the Justice Center and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. Tonier Cain, the keynote speaker, then provided a riveting account of her life, as someone who has experienced profound trauma starting at a young age, and her cycling in and out of the many systems as a result of those traumatic incidents and subsequent mental health and substance abuse problems. Ms. Cain offered a candid view of the many problems she encountered in both the mental health and criminal justice systems, but also provided hope through her remarkable recovery spurred by a specialty program in Baltimore.

- David D'Amora, Project Director, Criminal Justice/Mental Health Consensus Project, Council of State Governments Justice Center
- Danica Szarvas-Kidd, Policy Advisor for Adjudication, Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice
