I am looking for any data regarding implementation of CIT in a prison/jail setting. I know of research performed on the implementation of CIT in Correctional Settings in Maine. Does anyone know of any others?

Maine is typically the example I give when asked about this. They have done great work there around training corrections officials in crisis intervention, and a local university even evaluated their efforts.

I would suggest looking to the National Institute of Corrections’ (NIC) recent broadcast on this issue. (http://community.nicic.gov/blogs/nic/archive/20…) NIC has made the response to people with mental illnesses a priority, and they have several relevant resources about it.

The Utah CIT Statewide Program has developed CIT Correction Academies, which include locations, scenarios, and topic matter based on what correction officers may experience. (http://www.slcpd.com/insideslcpd/investigations…)

The Harris County (Houston, TX) Jail has developed a Mental Health Officer Program. You can learn more about this effort from their website. (www.hcso.hctx.net/detention/MHU.asp)

I believe Hancock County in Ohio has implemented crisis intervention training for jail staff, although I am not directly familiar with their program. (http://cjccoe.neoucom.edu/index.php/jail_divers…)

The Los Angeles Police Department has developed and implemented a course for the personnel assigned to the City Jails and has a course of instruction during the detention officer academy. This is followed up with roll call training for the detention officers to bring them current and answer questions. You can inquire for course specifics by contacting Detective Escontrias at 24189@LAPD.LACITY.ORG.

In Oklahoma, we have revised the Memphis CIT model in two separate training packages, one for probation/parole officers and one for correctional facility officers. We call it Correctional Conflict Resolution Training (CCRT), because we do not tecnically have “teams” as implied in “CIT.” We have pre-post test data and participant survey data that has shown it to be a great success, but I also have great anecdotes of how it has changed lives, on the job and at home. This coming year, we plan on having specialized training for wardens and community corrections administrators to help them understand how to utilize the expertise that their CCRT trained staff have to offer. This is a training that should be required in all agencies. We were a part of the NIC webinar referenced by Laura Draper, and I believe we have an article coming out in “Corrections Today.” The contact person for CIT at NIC is Mike Dooley. I have heard Colorado DOC also has a good program.
