We are in the process of developing protocols and procedures for the use of telemed in some of our rural jails. The telemed will be used primarily to meet a inmate’s need for med mgt via a Psychiatrist or APRN. This will hopefully prevent transportation challenges for jail staff and increase the psychiatric care available to inmates in rural areas. Does anyone have experience with telemed within a jail setting and do they procedures/protocols they would be willing to share? Many thanks |

Greetings here from Fayette County, Texas. While we do not yet have policies and procedures, we are just now up and running with tele-medicine in our jail and our local rural hospital. We have a distinct challenge in that we are addressing both adults and juveniles, so we’ve been creative in keeping the actual telemedicine portal outside of the jail proper so that it can be used by juvenile probation, as well. Would love to stay connected about policies and procedures as we move forward. Susan Stone |

Hello from Kalamazoo, Michigan. I’m curious about the technical aspects of your program. Specifically, what hardware and software are you utilizing in your telemedicine program and how did you address the privacy and security concerns of your communications. Have you had problems with billing these contacts to a payor? Thanks, Robert Butkiewicz |
