Ronald S. Honberg, J.D.
Ron Honberg, J.D., serves as the national director for policy and legal affairs at the National Alliance on Mental Illness(NAMI). As the director of NAMI's policy team, Mr. Honberg oversees NAMI's work on legal and federal and state policy issues. In recent years, he has worked particularly on issues affecting people with mental illnesses involved with criminal justice systems, including jail diversion, correctional treatment, and community reentry. He was also one of the lead authors of NAMI's 2006 and 2009 "Grading the States" reports.
During his twenty years with NAMI, he has drafted amicus curiae briefs in precedent-setting litigation impacting people with mental illnesses and has provided technical assistance to attorneys and NAMI affiliates. He has also published a number of articles on policy and legal issues affecting people with mental illness and other disabilities.
Mr. Honberg has a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland School of Law and a masters degree in counseling from the University of Maryland.
Tim Murray
Tim Murray is the executive director of the Pretrial Justice Institute. At PJI, he has successfully garnered the support of stakeholders such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Association of Counties, the American Bar Association, National Public Radio, the US Department of Justice, numerous philanthropic foundations, and others in calling for safe and rational pretrial justice policies. Prior to joining PJI, Mr. Murray served in a variety of executive positions with the Bureau of Justice Assistance, including deputy director. He was instrumental in the design and implementation of the nation's first drug court in Miami, Florida, he convened the first national drug court conference and served as the first federal drug court program office director. He is the proud recipient of Pioneer Awards from the National Association of Drug Court Professionals and the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies (NAPSA), as well as NAPSA's Olgiati and Member of the Year awards.
Henry J. Steadman, Ph.D.
Henry J. Steadman, Ph.D., has been the president of Policy Research Associates, Inc. since he founded it in 1987. Previously, Dr. Steadman ran a nationally known research bureau for seventeen years for the New York State Office of Mental Health. His work has resulted in eight books, more than 130 articles in a wide range of professional journals, twenty chapters, and numerous reports.
Among Dr. Steadman's major current projects are: (1) the National GAINS Center for Evidence-Based Practices in the Justice System; (2) the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Mental Health Court Study; (3) the CMHS Transformation Center; and (4) SAMHSA's Technical Assistance and Policy Analysis Center for Jail Diversion.
He received his B.A. and M.A. in sociology from Boston College and his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
