AJA and Arlington, VA Sheriff's Office Co-hosting Training for Jail Staff on Mental Illnesses

The American Jail Association (AJA) and the Arlington County Sheriff's Office (Virginia), are co-hosting a training event on August 24-26, 2009 in Arlington, Virgina.

The course will provide attendees practical methods and best practices for effectively managing people with mental illnesses in in local jails. Instructors present techniques for deescalating conflicts involving this population, along with treatment options that work in the corrections environment. This session will also cover ways to recognize the symptoms of common Axis I mental disorders and issues related to housing, classification, and discipline of people with mental illnesses. Participants will be given information on the key role nutrition plays as it relates to stabilization, the importance of partnering with community mental health providers and pre-discharge planning, forming multidisciplinary teams, and working with local criminal justice partners.
